Everything You Need to Know About Tandem Paragliding

What Is Tandem Paragliding?

In tandem paragliding, a passenger flies together with a certified pilot on a specially designed two-seat paraglider. The pilot handles all the controls — from launch to landing — so absolutely no experience is needed on your part. You simply strap in, sit back, and let the Himalayas unfold beneath you. The view does all the talking. If the pilot is comfortable with conditions, they may even let you take the controls briefly mid-flight for a taste of true freedom in the sky.

Why Bir Billing Is a World-Class Tandem Flying Destination

Bir Billing is not just popular — it is ranked among the top paragliding destinations in the world, having proudly hosted the Paragliding World Cup. The secret lies in the valley’s extraordinary geography: the mighty Dhauladhar mountain range creates a natural amphitheatre that generates powerful, consistent thermal and ridge lift conditions perfect for long, sustained flights.

Flights launch from Billing at 2,400m altitude and glide down to the landing zone in Bir village at 1,400m, covering approximately 14 km of breathtaking Himalayan terrain — snow-capped peaks, pine-forested ridges, terraced fields, ancient monasteries, and wide-open sky in every direction.

The Tandem Flying Experience — Step by Step

Here is exactly what happens from the moment you arrive at the launch site to the moment your feet touch the ground:

  1. Arrival & briefing at the launch site — Your pilot walks you through the flight plan, safety procedures, and what to expect during takeoff, the flight, and landing. Questions are always welcome.
  2. Gearing up — You are fitted with a tandem harness and helmet. Your pilot performs a thorough safety check of all equipment before you move to the launch slope.
  3. The takeoff run — Just a short 5–10 step run down the grassy slope, the wing inflates above you, and within seconds your feet leave the ground. It happens faster than you expect — and the exhilaration hits immediately.
  4. Don’t sit or jump at take off time — stay upright and keep running until the wing fully lifts you. Listen to your pilot carefully and follow every instruction in the moment.
  5. Soaring — Your pilot skilfully rides thermal updrafts and mountain ridges to keep you aloft. Depending on your package, you may gently spiral upward, drift over the Kangra Valley, or simply float in peaceful silence above the Dhauladhar peaks.
  6. Communication throughout the flight — Your pilot is right behind you the entire time. They narrate the landscape, point out landmarks, and guide the experience around your comfort level — whether you want calm serenity or a little added thrill.
  7. The gentle landing in Bir’s open meadows — Your pilot brings you in slowly and smoothly. You stand up, take a breath, and look back up at the sky you just flew through. Most guests immediately want to go again.

Who Can Fly Tandem?

Tandem paragliding at Bir Billing is suitable for almost everyone. There is no fitness requirement, no prior flying experience, and no special skill needed. Guests aged 12 to 70+ fly with us regularly — first-timers, families, senior travellers, and everyone in between.

The typical weight range for tandem flights is 35–100 kg. Guests outside this range should contact us in advance so we can advise on the best options. For safety reasons, guests with serious heart conditions, severe vertigo, or recent surgeries are advised to consult a doctor before booking.

What to Wear and Bring

  • Comfortable, layered clothing — temperatures drop significantly at altitude, even on warm days.
  • Closed-toe shoes — sneakers or hiking boots are ideal. Sandals and flip-flops are not permitted for safety.
  • Sunglasses — the glare at altitude can be intense, especially with mountain snow reflecting sunlight.
  • Sunscreen — UV exposure increases with altitude. Apply before your flight.
  • A light jacket or windbreaker — even if it feels warm in Bir village, it can be noticeably cooler at 2,400m.
  • Leave heavy bags behind — lockers are available at the launch site. Small pockets and a phone are fine, but large backpacks stay on the ground.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is tandem paragliding safe?

Yes — when conducted by certified pilots using properly maintained equipment, tandem paragliding has an excellent safety record. At Girik Himalaya, every pilot is licensed and experienced, all equipment meets international safety standards, and weather conditions are assessed before every single flight. If conditions are not ideal, we postpone rather than risk passenger safety.

Will I feel sick or scared?

Most passengers feel pure exhilaration rather than fear or nausea. The launch is typically the most nerve-racking moment — but within seconds of leaving the ground, the smooth, gentle sensation of soaring takes over and calm replaces anxiety. Paragliding is far smoother than a roller coaster; there are no sudden drops, just a steady, peaceful glide through mountain air. Motion sickness is uncommon, though if you are prone to it, mention it to your pilot beforehand.

Can I bring my phone or camera?

Yes, your phone is welcome. However, holding it mid-flight can be tricky (and risky — dropped phones are non-recoverable at altitude!). We strongly recommend our GoPro 360° and DSLR photo/video packages, which are mounted to the equipment for hands-free, professional-quality footage of your entire flight. You will have both hands free to enjoy the experience rather than fumbling with a camera.

What if the weather is bad on my booked day?

Weather in the Himalayas can be unpredictable, and we never compromise safety for a booking. If conditions are unsuitable on your scheduled day — high winds, poor visibility, or storm activity — your flight will be postponed and rescheduled at no extra charge. We monitor weather conditions from early morning and will notify you as early as possible if a change is needed. Flexible rescheduling is always available.

How long does the whole experience take?

Plan for 2 to 4 hours in total for the full experience. This includes the transfer from Bir village up to the Billing launch site (45–60 min), your pre-flight briefing and gearing up (20–30 min), the flight itself (15 min to 2+ hours depending on your package), and the return transfer from the landing zone. We recommend building in some extra time to soak in the views at launch — the scenery alone is worth it.

What will I do at take off time?

Don’t sit or jump at take off time — stay upright and keep running until the wing fully lifts you. Listen to your pilot carefully and follow every instruction in the moment.
